LYSA TOPSoccer was the recipient of the first University of Kentucky Outstanding Service-Learning Award. The award is presented in honor of our commitment to CIS-112 students that volunteer with TOPS each semester. For the past three years, TOPS has worked closely with the Communication and Information Studies (CIS) 112 classes. The students in these classes must pick from a list of organizations and volunteer at least ten hours as well as completing class assignments on their placement.  Each semester TOPS accepts ten volunteers. The students serve in many capacities– buddies, setting up fields, planning activities, helping coaches with practices, help with bowling night, assisting with volunteer check-in, handing out uniforms, and organizing and planning the end of the fall season event. TOPS is very proud of our involvement with the CIS-112 students and are thankful that over half of the students that have volunteered over the three years are still involved.

CIS-112 program director Dr. Allyson B. DeVitto said, “We wanted to do something to recognize the organizations that work with our students each year. So we asked the students to nominate organizations for the award.”  Janice Birdwhistell accepted the award for TOPS. Birdwhistell said, “I was overwhelmed with emotion hearing the comments made by the students and their professors about their involvement with TOPS. We love working with the students and having them as part of the TOPS family.”
