Age Group Change Coming for Fall 2026
In alignment with Kentucky Youth Soccer Association, the official governing body for youth soccer (of which LYSA is a part of), LYSA will shift its age group player formation cycle to run from Aug. 1 to July 31 (school year) starting with the 2026 fall season. Through the 2026 spring season, the age cycle has been Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 (birth year).
Please see the table below for specific age groups.
Why the change?
The change comes from US Youth Soccer, the national governing body for youth soccer. The change was made based on extensive review, critical feedback, data and expert input to better align players with their school-grade peers. US Youth Soccer and its associations believe that this age group player formation will be the most inclusive and help increase participation.
How will this affect my child?
Some players who were slated to move up in age groups under the previous age formations will not move up this year. Specifically, children born August through December of a calendar year who were slated to move up would remain in their previous age group.
What if I still want my child to move up?
LYSA understands that some players who have played with certain players, a coach or sibling(s) may be separated from their previous team. LYSA will take requests for players to move up during this transition process but cannot guarantee they will be honored. The move is being made by LYSA’s governing bodies, and LYSA is expected to take steps to comply. LYSA hopes to place all players in appropriate age groups within the next one to two years.

The Diego Garcia Uniform Scholarship form should be emailed to president@lysa.org. If approved. you will receive correspondence on how to utilize the scholarship fund prior to the season.
Volunteer Coaching Requirements
- Coaches and assistant coaches are required to complete a background check and take the SafeSport training as required by KYSA! You cannot be placed on roster without completion of both.
- Please let LYSA Registrar Lois Stephens (registrar@lysa.org) where you intend to practice. There are a lot of neighborhood parks that can be utilized. Teams are built around the practice site and parents find it difficult to travel 20-plus minutes to practice in rush hour traffic.
- Also remember that parents have other responsibilities and find it difficult to get to practice before 5:30 p.m.
- Most importantly, do not promise a player that they can be on your team. Returning players get to return to the teams they were on in the fall season. Next priority would be a sibling of a player on the team (if there is room).
- Children of coaches may play up if their parent chooses to head coach. Siblings may play up (if space allows) to the older sibling’s team. No promises will be made to any parents or coaches concerning playing up.
- No promises will be made concerning being on a particular team or with a particular coach. If room allows we will try to accommodate, but there will be no guarantees made.
