Basic Rules

  • U5–U6 are 3v3 with six period segments.
  • U8 is 4v4 (no goalies and indirect free kicks) and four 12-minute quarters.
  • U10 is 7v7 (penalty kicks and direct kicks allowed) with two 25-minute halves.
  • U12 is 9v9 (offsides and slide tackles allow) and two 30-minute halves.
  • U14 Mixed is 11v11 (heading allowed) with two 35-minute halves.
  • U14 Girls is 8v8 (heading allowed) and two 35-minute halves.
  • U16 and U19 is 8v8 and two 35-minute halves. 

Slide Tackling Policy

No slide tackles are permitted until U12.

Slide tackles are considered a dangerous play for young children and are strictly prohibitied from U4–U10. Any slide tackle in these younger ages will result in a foul call.

Heading Policy (per KYSA/US Soccer)

Heading is not allowed in U4–U12 games. Intentional headers will be whistled. Inadvertent deflections off the head may not – to ref’s discretion.

  • U4–U8: If a player heads the ball, whether deliberately or accidentally, an indirect free kick should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense. 
  • U10–U12: If a header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the nearest point to where the infringement occured. 
  • U12 teams in a controlled and individual environment (where heading is an isolated skill being taught away from any form of opposition or other aspects of the game), players may head the ball up to 20 times per week in practice sessions, and should limit time spent on headers to 30 minutes per week.
